Australian Pet Shop Reviews

I love to visit pet stores. It's one of my favourite things to do - compare prices, animal conditions, what accessories they have in, and every now and then find some rats with rare varieties. There's good and bad stores, so I thought I might make a page with some reviews for those who happen to be in the area. I would love your own reviews so that we can make this page as big and helpful as possible! If you have a review please visit our contact page and keep it in the same format as below.

Please note that I will be keeping "bad reviews" to minimum detail, as it isn't my intention to black mail anyone, but rather promote the pet stores that are awesome.

This store is big and has a lot of rats with rare varieties including blues, blazes, rex, carasilk and other coat types. I hear they get their stock from a large scale breeder in Maitland. Unfortunately the particular rats I picked up did not have the best of health, however this doesn't indicate that all of them are unhealthy.

I've bought many rats from these guys, the store used to be great with big cages for the rats and helpful staff. Due to changed conditions over the years however, I wouldn't recommend them. On a side note though, these rats tend to have awesome conformation.

This store is generally good with some cool accessories such as glass water feeders and cute hidey-hole houses. They don't usually have many rats for sale, the cages are kept behind a glass wall so you will need to ask to handle them. I haven't handled or bought any of them myself, so I can't comment too much on the subject.

This store is great! They don't usually sell animals (aside from fish, some rabbits and occasional other small animals that people bring in). It's massive and they have lots of stock such as huge rat/ferret cages, rat carry tubs, CareFresh bedding, premium dog/cat food (Innova and other brands), Innova ferret food, and a big selection of dog treats. They certainly aren't cheap though.

Very helpful, caring staff, animals kept in clean reptile style glass cages. Good range of products and good prices. They DON'T separate their males and females in the rats and mice. Guinea pigs are - just not the mice and rats. Cages for all animals immaculate but they feed the same food to guinea pigs and rats. The rats I've had through this store are extremely healthy and very robust, though they do tend to end up with the odd rat that is too young to be away from mum from which ever breeder they use. I would highly recommend these guys if they would separate into sex groups.

Extremely clean, not such a great range of accessories or cages. Prices reasonable. Rats are kept separated and immaculate. However I have seen a lot of badly sneezing and sickly rats in their display. The staff vary in their knowledge but overall are professional, very caring and very happy to refund for a sick animal. Probably most helpful staff in a pet store I've found so far. I've found them quite honest and appreciative of constructive criticism and to learn. Recommend the store, but advise caution on their rats.

HUGE store, HUGE range, staff have a great knowledge base in most areas of animals. They keep "expert" staff in each area (eg: people who specialise in bird behaviour only work in the bird area, same with fish)...except when it comes to rats, mice and guinea pigs. Guinea pigs are well kept and separated into sex groups. Rats and mice are kept in separate sex groups, extremely clean tank set ups, however they are often overcrowded with way too many animals in each tank. The rats I've had from this store have often ended up displaying quite severe aggression before they hit 6 months which is a shame as they are often very healthy and stunning looking. However for range of products for rats, mice and guinea pigs - they are extremely good!

This pet shop is stupidly fantastic. They only breed their rats internally and so actually have a waiting list for rats, and they aren't available much. The rats are kept in awesome conditions - big cages with nice litter and accessories. They also have a cute manx girl that I got to meet who isn't for sale or being bred. They require adoption forms and are all about education. On top of that they have some great rat cages for sale and other accessories - although they aren't overly cheap. The place also had a great atmosphere, there were people coming into the store with ratties on their shoulders and such. Would definitely recommend this one.

I wouldn't recommend this pet store. They did have rats for sale and a small selection of accessories.

The staff here were really friendly and helpful. The rats were kept in fantastic conditions, with good litter, accessories and fresh food/water. They even had Dapper Rat posters hanging around the rat area! When we went in they had a couple of rescue rats that were dumped at their door, apparently this happens a fair bit. They also had a decent selection of accessories. I'd definitely recommend this pet store.

I would most definitely recommend these guys. When I went in they had about 200 rescue rats in, taken from a person who was keeping them in heaps of small carry tubs. The rats were moved into big spacious cages with fresh food/water, accessories, and decent bedding. They are kept outside under a balcony in the fresh air. The owner of the store is very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. He is also a large scale feeder breeder (with his own pet rats on the side) who keeps his rats in great conditions. They had heaps of accessories too, all the pet enclosures were clean and pleasant to see. Awesome pet shop, and I'll be going back there for sure.
